Have You Noticed Your Marble Coverage Isn’t What It Should Be?
At Resin Bonded Ltd, we’ve been proudly supplying trade materials for Resin Bound installations for over 21 years. In that time, we’ve seen the industry evolve in many ways – new tools, new techniques, and new trends. One of the more noticeable trends in recent years has been the rising popularity of marble stone as the aggregate of choice in Resin Bound applications.
There’s no denying that marble looks great – its clean, crisp finish adds a touch of luxury to driveways, patios, and pathways. But there’s something about marble that isn’t being talked about enough in the trade…
The Hidden Truth About Marble Coverage
Most suppliers will tell you that their marble mix – when laid at the standard 18mm depth – will cover approximately 3.5m² per kit. But in reality, we (and many of our customers) are seeing something different. The true coverage tends to be closer to 3.1m².
That might not sound like much at first – but when you’re laying a full driveway, that shortfall can quickly add up. Installers are finding themselves caught short, forced to stretch mixes or rush to source additional material at the last minute.

So, what’s going on?
It’s all about the weight.
Marble is denser than many traditional natural aggregates, meaning that 25kg of marble takes up less physical space than 25kg of standard aggregate. When you tip it into the mixer, it simply doesn’t fill the drum like you’d expect.
In fact, we’ve noticed that some of the major quarries supplying marble have even switched to using smaller bags – not because the quantity has changed, but because the same 25kg of marble doesn’t fill a standard-sized bag. It’s a small change with big implications.
Why is nobody talking about this?
That’s a good question. This shortfall in coverage isn’t commonly advertised, and it’s rarely mentioned until you find yourself a kit short on-site.
We’re sharing this not to point fingers, but to help you plan better and avoid frustrating surprises. It’s time this “open secret” in the industry was brought into the light.

What can you do?
- Plan your material quantities carefully. If you’re using marble, consider adjusting your expected coverage down slightly – closer to 3.1m² per kit at 18mm depth.
- Talk to your supplier. Ask whether their figures are based on lab tests, real-world installs, or industry assumptions.
- Share your experience. Have you noticed your mixers aren’t as full with marble? Have your bags looked smaller than usual? Let us know – we’d love to hear from others who’ve run into the same issue.
Conclusion
We believe in transparency and accuracy in the trade. That’s why we’re bringing attention to this issue – so installers aren’t left short on jobs, and expectations are properly managed.
Marble might be beautiful, but it’s worth understanding the quirks that come with it.
